A tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty) is usually a term that we relate to vanity. It is considered a cosmetic surgery – tightening the stomach muscles and removing loose skin and/or extra fat – but much more than a confidence boost can be gained from this procedure.
For women, one of the main reasons to undergo the procedure is to restore the figure that may have changed during pregnancy. For both men and women, the surgery is common after extreme weight loss. No matter the reason though, what may seem astonishing to some individuals is the many medical benefits to a tummy tuck.
- Continued or Lasting Weight Loss
It has recently been proven in studies that tummy tucks can actually increase the feeling of satiety. This seems to be related to the neuroendocrine system, meaning that some appetite-altering hormones which are secreted by fatty tissue are removed. Although a tummy tuck should not been done just for the means of weight loss, this discovery is an incredible “plus” for many people.
- Better Posture and a Stronger Body
When the muscles in your stomach become weakened and distended, it can lead to a condition called lordosis (a curvature of the spine) that can cause poor posture and lower back pain. In extreme cases, the loose skin hanging from the lower abdomen can also cause a painful “pulling” sensation that can, again, result in poor posture. Having this skin removed and your muscles tightened will fix these issues.
- Easier Work Outs
As that loose skin or those weakened muscles can cause poor posture, they can also make it very difficult to get in a proper work out. Running can cause the skin to bounce and pull at you. Push-ups can leave your stomach hanging and feeling as though the skin is ripping your muscles. It can be an incredibly uncomfortable feeling and can easily impede your exercise attempts.
- For Women: Treatment of Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI)
Stress Urinary Incontinence is a condition that is seen often after a woman goes through natural childbirth. With it, a simple sneeze, cough, or even a laugh can cause uncontrollable leakage. It is an embarrassing and annoying problem for many. Tummy tucks relieve the pressure on your midsection and can aid in the treatment of SUI.
Whichever reason has left you with the decision to having a tummy tuck, it is undeniable that the benefits you will experience are substantial.
