Some people hear the word “liposuction” and they think it’s an outdated treatment – that getting the “fat sucked out” is in our past. Others may have heard horror stories of liposuction gone wrong, perhaps leaving unlucky individuals with lumpy, uneven skin. However, like most things, there is a right and wrong way to do this procedure. And there are right and wrong candidates.
Liposuction is a procedure where fat deposits are removed from the body. The main process generally used is called tumescent liposuction; this involves injecting a local anesthetic into the areas of fat which causes them to become swollen and firm (tumescent actually means “swollen and firm”) which gives the surgeon better control when treating the area. A skinny tube called a cannula is then inserted into small incisions and, using back and forth movements, the fat is literally sucked out.
Tumescent liposuction is now the most commonly practiced form of liposuction (and it’s the one our surgeons use!). It is considered as effective and safe, and results in quicker recovery and less pain. However, not all liposuction procedures are the same. The horror stories you may have heard are usually a result of the old practices. For example, dry or “traditional” liposuction is an outdated form of the procedure that used no injections into the fat before suctioning. This resulted in excessive blood loss and those irregular “lumpy” patterns in the skin’s surface.
We hope your uncertainties about the actual procedure of liposuction are now put to rest. Now are you a good candidate? The perfect patient for this procedure is someone who has small amounts of fat that they are unable to remove through diet and exercise alone. Although this procedure is to remove fat, it is not considered a “weight loss procedure”. It is primarily used to focus on those “problem” areas where the fat doesn’t seem to budge, such as your lower abdomen, underarms, or that pesky double chin. Liposuction is not the solution if you have a large amount of weight to lose or if you are trying to get rid of loose skin.
